Computer education

Like all subjects, computer education can be best taught through a partnership of teacher, student, and parent.  Computer education can continue at home through your family or student's computer.

School programs you can use at home

In the 2009-2010 School year, OLA will be using a web-based Type-To-Learn 4 for keyboarding skills.  The advantage of a web-based application is that our students can also practice at home.  See your student or the computer education teacher for more information.

Internet safety

The Internet is an uncontrolled frontier that contains information you will likely not want your children accessing.  A number of methods exists to block inappropriate content on your child's computer.  We suggest you install content controlling software like CyberSitter, noted in the above list.  Other options are available.

Internet safety includes understanding other threats that exist on the Internet besides inappropriate content.  Additional resources are available for you and your child to learn about online predators, identity theft, and not posting private information on the Internet.  Your kids may know more about these issues than you unless you visit these sites and become informed.  We suggest these resources as a starting point.
OLA periodically offers training to parents at the school based upon NetSmartz materials.  Contact the school office for more information.
