Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
<\/strong><\/strong>~<\/em>I have chosen you from the world, <\/em>says the Lord,
to go and bear fruit that will remain.<\/em>~<\/em>

Before the tenants in today’s Gospel do anything, the vineyard is already finished. The vines are planted, the wall is built, and the winepress and watchtower are ready. The owner has done the hard part and asks only that they tend it and share in its fruit. We can look at our own lives the same way. Our families, our work, our parish and school community, even this very morning, all arrived as gifts. We did not earn them or build them from nothing. We have been given something beautiful and trusted to care for it.

In this parable, the owner’s patience stands out. He sends one servant after another, and finally his own Son, hoping for a good harvest. God’s hope in us is stubborn. He does not give up on the vineyard or on the people tending it. Then Jesus offers a surprising image: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” The Cross looked like the end, but God built the Resurrection on it. Anything we think is broken beyond repair is something God can still build on. This week, we can look with fresh eyes at what God has placed in our care and give thanks for the things we have been taking for granted. A small act of kindness or patience, offered at the right moment, can quietly bear fruit. And each of us has the chance to be a steady, welcoming presence for someone who needs a cornerstone in their life. We do not have to produce a harvest by our own strength. He is the vine; we are the branches. If we remain in Him, we will bear much fruit.<\/em>
