Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Family,

Imagine stumbling onto something so precious that everything else in your life suddenly reorganizes itself around it. That’s the picture Jesus paints today: a hidden treasure, a pearl beyond price, found almost by accident and pursued with joy. That’s what it looks like to discover God’s kingdom. We can’t ever pay the full price for the life God offers us, but when we’re willing to let go of what we’re clutching, we find our hands open to receive something far greater.

Jesus also tells us about a net that gathers in everything—every kind of fish, without sorting or excluding. God’s welcome is wide. His kingdom isn’t reserved for the already-worthy; it’s offered freely to all who will receive it, and our work is to help draw others in, trusting God with the rest. Jesus does tell us that a day of sorting will come—but even that isn’t cause for anxiety so much as an invitation. It’s a reminder that how we respond to God’s invitation matters, and that there’s still time, today, to say yes with our whole heart. And like a household bringing out treasures both old and new, God’s kingdom doesn’t erase what came before—it fulfills it, deepens it, makes it new again. Nothing precious is ever truly lost. Whatever season you’re in today, have the courage to sell what needs selling, the joy to recognize the treasure in front of you, and the trust to let God’s kingdom take root and grow in your heart.

Have a peaceful day!

Yours in Christ,
Father Edward Domme
