The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

Dear OLA Parish Family,

Today is  Corpus Christi, or the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, the solemn commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist. It is, moreover, the Church’s official act of homage and gratitude to Christ, who, by instituting the Holy Eucharist, gave the Church her greatest treasure. Holy Thursday marks the anniversary of the institution, but the commemoration of the Lord’s passion that very night suppresses the rejoicing proper to the occasion. Today’s observance, therefore, accents the joyous aspect of Holy Thursday.

When we receive communion, we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ. Jesus made Himself an offering and sacrifice, a perfect gift that was truly pleasing to the Father in heaven. As the living bread that came down from heaven, Jesus grants eternal life to those who partake of the Eucharist. The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a celebration of the presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. The primary fruit of receiving the Eucharist is our intimate union with Christ. As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, the Eucharist strengthens us in charity and enables us to be more firmly rooted in the love of Christ.

Have a peaceful day.

Yours in Christ,
Father E. Domme
